Teen death in Labrador raises search and rescue ability into question
Labradors northern coast suffered the loss of a teenage boy recently. The NDP’s defence critic is raising questions about the search and rescue responses to crisis. The 14 year old Burton Winters was found only three days after his parents started looking. Airborne abs military help was called Sunday, but did not come to help until Tuesday, when Winters snow mobile was found. Winters had walked along the shoreline, away from his abandoned snowmobile. Military sources says they were on stand by, and says there was a communication error as to why they didn’t come immediately. Newfoundland and Labrador say they don’t have the funds for search and rescue operations, although searchers were using a private helicopter to search the iced packed coastline of Makkovik (Northern Labrador) for the missing teen.
